To reduce the risks of landslides and devastation in the hilly regions of Uttarakhand, the Union Road and Highway Ministry sought help to provide solutions and partnered with civil engineering solution provider, Maccaferri. The solution has now been implemented as the Maccaferri completes the construction of reinforced soil wall on NH-58 passing through Lambagarh, Uttarakhand which is also the road that leads to the Badrinath shrine. For many years, extreme weather conditions along with man-made factors have been causing heavy loss and damage to infrastructure. Whenever a landslide occurs during monsoon season, it causes disruption to traffic and also holds up devotees for days in a particular region, restricting further travel.
The solution implemented by the government in partnership with Maccaferri is expected to “counteract the destabilizing forces in the restricted space” and improve the safety as well as quality of the road in the region.
As per Maccaferri, “the project involved constructing a reinforced soil wall having a maximum height of 44m. This was to be supported with gabions as a facia and high strength geogrid. The construction was to be done across a stretch of 500m. To be sure, gabions are cages engineered from double twisted hexagonal woven steel wire mesh.”

One of the most ambitious projects of Uttar Pradesh government, Bundelkhand Expressway, is all set to get operational by the end of the current year. The 296km long highway is billed to be the safest four-lane expressway in the country as it is based on Forgiving Roads (FR), a concept aimed at avoiding or minimising the harm and consequences of traffic accidents. FR includes a road design that seeks to smoothly redirect motorists who go off the highways out of confusion over the exit ways.
The expressway, which is four-lane access-controlled is being built by Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) with four private infrastructure majors: Apco Infratech, Ashoka Buildcon, Gawar Construction and Dilip Buildcon executing the project.
A leading global consultancy organization, the Intercontinental Consultants and Technocrats (ICT), is the Authority Engineer for the supervision of the expressway. “Most desirable design standards have been adopted to make it the safest expressway,” said K.K. Kapila, Chairman of Intercontinental Consultants.
The 5Es of safe road operations, he said, such as road engineering, vehicular engineering, education, enforcement and emergency care would be fully catered. “The expressway will have latest crash barriers, design of at-grade and grade separated junctions, appropriate traffic signage, road markings,” he added.
While policemen would be trained in accident data collection, first aid trauma care and Good Samaritan law, Automated Traffic Management System (ATMS) for safe operation of traffic and monitoring incident management are also being introduced. As for emergency care, the roadside community, including eateries, small repair shops and fuel stations would be trained on First Aid pre-hospital trauma care to assist the accident victims within the first hour.

Led by industrial machinery, products of iron and steel, 30 out of total 33 engineering goods categories recorded impressive growth in exports during May, 2021 with demand from traditional markets remaining robust.
“We have seen impressive growth in exports for the last three months in a row and the order books for the coming months remain strong. While demand has remained subdued in the domestic market, the engineering export sector has made a strong rebound. In order to keep the momentum, India needs to vaccinate most citizens at the earliest,” said EEPC India Chairman Mahesh Desai. “Given the prediction of repeated waves of pandemic, industry needs continuous support both from the Central government as well as states,” he added.
Engineering goods have been among the top performers in the export sector and have substantially contributed to the recovery. The share of engineering goods in total merchandise exports rose to 25.44% in May from 24.83% in April and 25.36% in March 2021. On a cumulative basis, its share stood at 25.23% during April-May of the current fiscal.
Engineering goods exports witnessed year-on-year growth for the third straight month to May 2021 and crossed US$ 8 billion for the second month after March 2021. As before, the US topped as India’s export destination for engineering goods. Shipments to the US jumped 56% to US$ 1,022 million in May, 2021 compared to US$ 655.37 million in the corresponding month last year. On a cumulative basis also, the growth rate was 144%.
