The country hit a three-year high in FY21 in the construction of national highways and the momentum continues in FY22 despite a devastating second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, market research agency.
Crisil said. “The covid-19 pandemic however disastrous to the overall Indian economy failed to hamper the growth of national highways construction in the country, which have seen significant increase in activity in the last fiscal year,” Crisil issued a statement.
The number of national highway projects that were awarded by the ministry of road transport and highways saw an increase of 123% with a total of 1,658kms added in the first quarter of the FY21 despite a nation-wide lockdown in the initial months to contain the pandemic. The overall National highway awards rose by 22.5% to a total of 10,965kms for the fiscal year 2021, a three-year high.
“The increased construction is expected to continue in the coming quarters due to the many projects under Bharatmala and developer-friendly measures recently taken up by MoRTH,” Crisil said. With the withdrawal of monsoon, the pace of construction is expected to be significantly ramped up in the coming months, it added.

The Union Cabinet approved the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for specialty steel to boost production of high grade steel in the country. The scheme will generate employment for about 5.25 lakh people — of which 68,000 will be direct and the rest will be indirect jobs.
The scheme is expected to bring in investment of approximately `40,000 crore and capacity addition of 25 MT. In addition, it also proposes to incentivise eligible manufacturers by paying between 4% to 12%incentive on incremental production.
“Any company registered in India, engaged in manufacturing of the identified ‘specialty steel’ grades will be eligible to participate in the scheme. It will however, have to ensure that the steel used for making specialty steel is melted and poured in the country, thereby ensuring end-to-end manufacturing keeping in view the Prime Minister’s, Atmanirbhar Bharat,” the Centre issued a statement. The scheme will cover coated/plated steel products; high strength/wear resistant steel; specialty rails; alloy steel products, steel wires and electrical steel.

Central Railway zone has successfully executed one of the longest micro tunnelling works in Mumbai, under the railway tracks for a length of 415 meter at Sandhurst Road railway station. It will prevent water logging on the railway tracks during the rainy season and the trains will run smoothly. The work involved the construction of as many as seven pits for facilitating the micro tunnelling work as per information from the Central Railways.
According to Central Railways, the micro tunnelling work under the railway tracks was successfully completed in four months’ time despite various challenges such as the passing of micro tunnelling alignment below sheds, eight RCC pit lines, 1.5 meter diameter RCC pipe of MCGM storm water drain, rail pieces in front of micro tunnelling machine in yard area, frequent changing of strata such as loose marshy soil, weathered rock to hard rock, etc.

India’s share in the global engineering and research and development (ER&D) market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12-13% to reach USD 63 billion by 2025, as per industry body Nasscom. Nasscom President Debjani Ghosh noted that the pandemic has altered the way consumers behave, interact with companies and how businesses interact, speaking at the Nasscom Engineering R&D Showcase 2021 event.
Contactless technologies, analytics, software-led systems are changing how products are designed, redesigned, engineered, and consumed, she added. “This represents a very unique opportunity for the ER&D companies in India that are primarily focusing on product design and innovation to partner with global enterprises and engineer the future, global megatrends like sustainability, create even more opportunities for product redesign and innovation and that is going to be tremendously important for the future of this industry,” Ghosh added.

With its versatile potential applications, compact dimensions and high performance, Vögele’s SUPER 1400i paver has proven itself in the Indian market for years. This popular all-rounder, which with the AB 480 Extending Screed can achieve pave widths of between 2.55m and 7.5m is now getting new drive technology developed in-house. The 4-cylinder diesel engine of the 4045 EWL type has an output of up to 110 kW, whilst its intelligent electronic engine control means it produces especially low emissions and saves fuel. Effective exhaust emissions after treatment with diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) significantly reduces harmful substances. The Vögele Universal Class paver thus satisfies India’s new CEV Stage IV emission standards and receives the “i” suffix in the machine name: this suffix stands for “intelligent emission control” and indicates environmentally friendly engines in which the latest technology guarantees especially low emissions.

The SUPER 1400i : A Powerful, Quiet And Low-Emission Machine
The new drive reduces noise levels as well as CO₂ emissions. The SUPER 1400i is rendered especially quiet by the variable-speed fan and integrated ECO mode. Like the paver itself, the engine is designed to cope with maximum strain: all its components are especially rugged. Steel pistons and wet-type cylinder liners, for example, ensure maximum reliability and a long service life. As a result, the SUPER 1400i provides road construction professionals with an especially sturdy, low-emission and user-friendly machine for small to medium-sized projects. The compact Universal Class paver from Vögele has a material hopper with a capacity of upto 13 t, a laydown rate of up to 600 t/h and can pave complex material such as Wet Mix Macadam (WMM) or Dry Lean Concrete (DLC) without any difficulties. The intuitive ErgoBasic operating concept also makes the machine especially simple, safe and convenient to operate.

Service From A Single Source
Apart from the machine technology, the service concept of the SUPER 1400i, too, is consistently aimed at users’ needs: as part of the Wirtgen Group, Joseph Vögele AG belongs to the John Deere Worldwide Construction & Forestry Division, which means that both the machine and the engine now come from a single source. Construction firms and construction machinery agents thus benefit from an expanded service network and a full range of maintenance services: all service intervals are harmonized and customers also need just one central contact for all their needs.
