Hindalco Industries, one of the country’s largest private aluminium players has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with cement major UltraTech Cement to deliver 1.2 million tonne of bauxite residue, red mud in industry parlance, annually to UltraTech’s 14 plants across seven states.
With this deal, Hindalco has become the world’s first aluminium company to achieve 100% red mud utilisation across three of its refineries. The move is a major step forward in reducing the cement industry’s dependence on mined materials like laterite, and replaces up to 3% of the clinker raw mix.
Hindalco is supplying red mud to UltraTech Cement plants where it has been proved to be an effective substitute for mined materials, successfully replacing up to 3% of clinker raw mix volume. Use of red mud reduces the cement industry’s dependence on natural resources and promotes a circular economy.
