JSW Energy Enters Into Agreement With Australian Fortescue Future Industries For Green Hydrogen

JSW Future Energy has entered into agreement with Australian Fortescue Future Industries, to collaborate for potential projects relating to the production of green hydrogen and utilizing it for green steel making, hydrogen mobility, green ammonia and other mutually agreed industrial applications in India.

JSW Energy joint MD & CEO, Prashant Jain said, “JSW Energy has laid out a strategic blueprint to become a 20 GW capacity power generating company by 2030 with about 85% of the portfolio comprising of green and renewable energy sources. We also aspire to be a green energy future tech company with a pro-active approach to adopt innovative technologies like green hydrogen, offshore wind, battery energy storage and be a front-runner in the green energy revolution. Green hydrogen is going to be a disruption in the clean energy space and in the near future, we believe it would replace the fossil fuels used for various industrial applications as well as in the transportation and mobility sector. We are excited about the partnership with FFI which has a promising repertoire of work in this area, and I am confident that along with FFI, we will create a new era of green hydrogen applications in India, and fulfill our net zero commitments earlier than our target of 2050”.

FFI CEO, Julie Shuttleworth said, “FFI is setting out to become the world’s leading energy and green products company, from fully renewable sources. The world’s transition to a renewable energy future represents a major growth opportunity and there will be many important markets for green hydrogen in the coming decade. Collaborating with JSW Energy provides an exciting opportunity to explore India’s renewable energy and green hydrogen market and positively contribute to India’s de-carbonization ambitions.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a National Hydrogen Mission to accelerate plans to generate the carbon-free fuel from renewable as he set a target of 2047 for India to achieve self-reliance in energy. The roadmap is to increase usage of natural gas in the economy, setting up a network for supply of CNG and piped natural gas across the country, blending 20% ethanol in petrol and electric mobility.

“Our efforts are showing results,” the PM said, adding that from an increase in forest cover, to increasing populations of Tigers and Asiatic Lions – the country is making strides in the environment sector adding, “We are giving equal emphasis to Environmental Security as to National Security. Be it biodiversity or land neutrality, climate change or waste recycling, organic farming, India is progressing in all these sectors.”

NTPC is right on track to commission India’s biggest floating solar power plant of 100 MW capacity at Ramagundam in Telangana. NTPC is constructing a 100 MW floating solar photovoltaic project at Ramagundam on a 450 acre water body of the 800 acre reservoir.

The project will be one of the largest single location floating solar projects on natural reservoir with water from Sri Ram Sagar project on Godavari river.

The project worth ₹423 crore, being executed by BHEL, will see supply of about 40 MW of merchant power from September 2021 and all of 100 MW before the end of 2021. NTPC has become India’s first energy company to declare its energy compact goals as part of the UN High-level Dialogue on Energy and is looking to install 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032.

The Andhra Pradesh government has identified 1.45 lakh acres in Kadapa, Kurnool, Anantapur districts where the energy department is planning to set up pumped hydro storage power projects with a total capacity of 33.24 gigawatt for these proposed renewable energy parks.

Energy secretary, Srikant Nagulapalli said these pumped hydro storage power will improve the power supply position in the state.

“It has become a role model for other states by saving `2,342 crore in 2019-20 and 2020-21. The Union ministry of power has also appreciated the AP power utilities for their sustained efforts to achieve savings and reduce burden on the discoms. The power utilities completed the agriculture feeder up-gradation works with `1,700 crore to supply free power during day time to more than 18 lakh agriculture pump sets. The power utilities have taken up special measures to reduce interruptions in power supply and provide quality power to consumers.  As a result, the interruptions reduced to 1.77 lakh in 2020-21 from three lakh in 2019-20. Similarly, the average cost of service reduced to `7.18 per unit in 2020-21 against `7.23 in 2019-20,” said Srikant.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari said his target is to achieve the pace of 100 km per day in highway construction while addressing a virtual event organised by industry body CII; the road, transport and highways minister said delays and not taking decisions is a big problem in the country.

“Infrastructure (development) is very important for the country…Even during the pandemic, we made a world record of constructing 38 km of road in a day,” he said. “…(but) I am not satisfied with the present performance,” Gadkari said adding that his target is to achieve the pace of up to 100 km per day of highway construction.

Gadkari also criticized the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials for delaying projects and/or creating obstacles in work. “If any one (contractor) wants to change his bank or financial institution, it takes him 3 months to 1.5 year to take NOC from NHAI…we can make this possible in 2 hours, then why is there a delay for 1.5 years, I am asking this question to officials,” he said.

He said asset monetisation is key to meet finances for road projects and the government is confident that NHAI will be able to raise ₹1.40 lakh crore per year from existing highway projects
